In an increasingly complex medical environment, with many specialties and subspecialties responsible for taking care of patients, communication needs to be clear to protect the patient and ourselves, the caregivers. Unbeknownst to many of us, improper communication, is fraught with hazards and risk. We intend to provide some guidelines to reduce these risks and propose a system for handover and communication which may benefit us all.
Programme goals & objectives:
- Illustrate some communication risks.
- Identify some shortcomings in common medical practice.
- Provide guidelines to address these.
- Propose a system of handover which encompasses a clear and direct benefit for continuity of care.
