Trinidad and Tobago Medical Association Congratulates Professors Charles, Maharaj and Unakal
The Trinidad and Tobago Medical Association (T&TMA) notes the recent announcement by the University of the West Indies (UWI) regarding the appointment of seven new professors, which includes three respected members from the medical sector. This trio of notable professionals in the medical field consists of Professor Kenneth Sterling Charles, Professor Ravi Maharaj, and Professor Chandrashekhar Unakal, all of whom are affiliated with the UWI St. Augustine Campus.
Professor Kenneth Charles has been awarded the title of Professor of Haematology and Blood Transfusion. Throughout his medical career, Professor Charles has held numerous positions, including serving as the founding Chairperson of the Trinidad and Tobago Society for Haematology and Blood Transfusion, as well as, being a member of the Council of the Medical Board of Trinidad and Tobago. In these significant roles, along with others he has undertaken, Professor Charles has made a substantial impact on the practice of haematology and blood transfusion medicine throughout Trinidad and Tobago.
Professor Ravi Maharaj has been honored with the title of Professor of Oncological Surgery. In addition to providing his patients with outstanding surgical care, he has demonstrated exceptional commitment to training the next generation of Caribbean surgeons. Professor Maharaj has held the position of Head of the Department of Clinical Surgical Sciences at the UWI St Augustine Campus since 2021. In this capacity, he has been instrumental in surgical training at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Professor Chandrashekhar Unakal has been conferred the title of Professor of Medical Microbiology. He currently serves as the unit coordinator for Pathology and Microbiology, and the programme coordinator for the DM Microbiology programme. In addition to his dedicated service in teaching and mentoring future medical microbiologists, Professor Unakal provides his expertise on a national scale by serving on both the Infection Prevention and Control Committee of the North Central Regional Health Authority and the Technical Working Group on Antimicrobial Resistance at the Trinidad and Tobago Ministry of Health.
