Statement on Related Legislative Requirements of Patient Access to Prescribed Medication

The Trinidad and Tobago Medical Association (T&TMA) has taken note of the ongoing
discussion surrounding patient access to pharmaceutics and the related legislative
requirements regarding prescribing as ventilated by the Pharmacy Board of Trinidad and
Tobago.

We have had a detailed discussion with the President and Secretary of the
Pharmacy Board of Trinidad and Tobago and have a common understanding that
patient safety is the priority consideration in all activity within the healthcare
system.

In the fruitful conversation the T&TMA underscored the importance of the doctor-patient
relationship and the sacred oath that drives our profession to act with humility as the
experts in diagnostics and therapeutics. The importance of this should not be impinged
upon by other professions.

In equal measure we remain cognizant and respectful of the role of other professions in
healthcare and urge all physicians to always hold in high regard the remit of all clinical
and paraclinical services that ultimately ensure service delivery.

As a group we have been invited to work with the Pharmacy Board of Trinidad and
Tobago on their discussions that will guide matter such as reasonable administration of
medication by physicians. We urge all doctors to become familiar with the legislative
frameworks that guide the medical profession as well as those fields related to medicine.
Finally, through our collaborative discussions, we disseminate the following email to
report instances where pharmacies are found to be acting in breach of the regulations as
stipulated by the Pharmacy Board of Trinidad and Tobago: complaints.pbtt@gmail.com
The T&TMA is built on the pillars of education, clinical excellence, mentorship and
advocacy for patients and physicians. We believe that through these multidisciplinary
efforts that patients stand to benefit from increased safety nets and the service that they
deserve.
