A Tribute to Dr. Phillip St Louis
The Trinidad and Tobago Medical Association (T&TMA) honors the life of Dr. Phillip St Louis. A neurosurgeon by trade, he provided care to his patients with a combination of his vast clinical experience and professionalism. He also extended his kindness to his colleagues, mentoring young neurosurgeons in both the North and South of the island, while serving the people of his native land after years spent abroad honing his skills and expanding his neurosurgical knowledge.
Dr. St Louis was an invaluable member of the T&TMA and served on the Council in various roles over the years. He would regularly use his keen, analytical eye to see beyond the ordinary and encourage us at the T&TMA to dare to take chances and to encourage our membership to do so with us. He was perpetually generous with his expertise and readily available for advice or counsel, especially in his advocating for the implementation of physician attendance to mandatory Continued Medical Education (CME) meetings, a subject that he was truly passionate about.
Dr. St Louis was a regular presenter and contributor at various T&TMA Branch CME meetings nationwide. In 2024, during his tenure as T&TMA Education Committee Chairperson, he championed the hosting of the very first T&TMA Medical Research Conference to be held in Tobago. None of us will ever forget his infectious smile as he led the conga line in the mixer the night before the conference on our beautiful sister aisle.
PSL…that’s the way he signed off on his messages to us….but three little letters belied the words and thoughts of a gentle giant of a man. While he served as a dedicated physician and surgeon to his fellow man, the pride heard in the timber of his voice and the delight in his eyes shone most prominently when he spoke about his family…like the rest of us, family was the mainstay of his joy.
It is with heavy hearts we bid you farewell, PSL. On behalf of the Executive and Council of the T&TMA, thank you for your life-long service to a nation, kindness to colleagues and devotion to our Association that you called your own.
You will certainly be missed!!
